THE COURSE - The Starting Block 10k course is set in rural Lavington just outside of Vernon. Even though the course is open to traffic, it is still a great location for a road race due to the low traffic volume in the area. The layout is a basic out-and-back. This course is quite fast. It is fairly flat and the hills that are present are gradual inclines and nothing to fear. The lead runners were extremely aggressive in these sections. There is one short portion of the course that is gravel (about 1km total distance). Although there were a couple of icy / muddy patches along this section, it was easy to avoid and did not inhibit the runners performance. This could be an issue if there is a lot of snow.
ORGANIZATION AND SUPPORT - The event had fantastic support from the volunteers. In all, there were over 40 volunteers at this non-profit event. Lavington Elementary School served as the home base for the registration and festivities. There were course marshals stationed at every turn along the course and there was a water fueling station at the 3k & 8k marks. Paramedics were on hand as a safety measure and this was a sanctioned event (insurance purposes). There was no timing chip for this race so the final times were as close as can be. The post race results were prompt and there was lots of drinks and snacks for the participants afterward. Several door prize draws were made during the award ceremony and a few people walked away with some nice swag. Toques were handed out to those who registered early. The Kal RATS were the host club for the event and they have a history of putting on solid races with good organization (disclaimer...I am a member).
WHO IS THIS RACE GOOD FOR?
If you have never done a 10k race then this is a good one to start. Casual but well supported. The event is just formal enough to make it an experience without intimidating you with massive crowds and ultra competitive runners. Although this event may not draw top-end running talent from the lower mainland, there are still some runners there that can cook. Top Dog finished in around 35 minutes! Check out the results on the Kal Rats website and take a look at our Okanagan section for road running events for the next IRA race!
